Q2 (¿Existe el universo? / Does the universe exist?)

El universo es todo lo que existe. Pero, ¿qué es eso? ¿Qué significa “todo lo que existe”?

¿Puede el universo estar constituido únicamente por una manzana? Parece que no. Una manzana  no puede ser el universo. Ni tampoco, una manzana y un árbol. Ni tampoco, una manzana, un árbol y París...

The universe is all that exists. But what is that? What does "all that exists” mean?

Can the universe contain only an apple? Apparently, it cannot. An apple cannot be the universe. Nor can it be an apple and a tree. Nor can it be an apple, a tree, and Paris...

El universo es todo lo que existe. Pero, ¿qué es eso? ¿Qué significa “todo lo que existe”?

¿Puede el universo estar constituido únicamente por una manzana? Parece que no. Una manzana  no puede ser el universo. Ni tampoco, una manzana y un árbol. Ni tampoco, una manzana, un árbol y París.

Por otro lado, parece que seguiría existiendo el universo aunque desaparecieran de algún lugar unos cuantos átomos. Y también, aunque desaparecieran algunos cometas. Y también aunque desaparecieran varias galaxias. Es más, parece que alguna vez el universo realmente fue muy pequeño.

¡Una manzana no basta, en cambio, pero pueden desaparecer galaxias enteras! ¿Qué es lo que debe haber para poder tener un universo? ¿Podemos precisar esto?

¿Es acaso el universo una entidad borrosa? ¿Es “ser un universo” algo así como “no ser calvo”?  Si eres calvo, tener varios pelos no te hace dejar de serlo. Añadir un pelo más a los pelos que tienes, tampoco. Y si no eres calvo, quitarte unos cuantos pelos, tal vez bastantes, no te hace ser calvo.

Mucha gente piensa que realmente no existen las personas calvas, que tan sólo existen personas con cierto número de pelos. ¿Podemos decir lo mismo del universo? ¿No existirá realmente el universo? ¿Sólo existirán unas cosas u otras: manzanas, árboles, París, etc.? ¿Es acaso el universo sólo un “objeto ordinario”, un objeto “vagamente definido”?

Pero, si existe el universo, ¿cómo debería estar constituido? ¿Por qué una manzana no puede constituir un universo (ni una manzana, un árbol, y París) y, en cambio, sí podrían desaparecer galaxias enteras del universo?

On the other hand, it seems that the universe would still exist even disappearing somewhere a few atoms. And that it would still exist although some comets were to disappear. And that it would still exist even though several galaxies were to disappear. Moreover, it seems that once the universe really was very small.

An apple is not enough, but entire galaxies may disappear! What should you have in order to have a universe? Can we make precise this?

Is the universe a fuzzy entity? Is "being a universe" something like "not being bald"? If you are bald, then to have several more hairs does not make you stop being so. Nor to add a hair to the hairs you have, either. And if you are not bald, then to take off a few hairs, even a lot of them, does not make you bald.

Many people think that there really are no bald people, that there are only people with a certain number of hairs. Can we say the same of the universe? Do not really exist the universe? Just there will be some things or others: apples, trees, Paris, etc.? Is the universe perhaps an “ordinary object”, an object “only vaguely defined”? 

However, if the universe exists, how should it be constituted? Why an apple cannot constitute a universe (or an apple, a tree, and Paris) but, in contrast, entire galaxies could disappear in the universe?
